Jung’s concern was that as a very young species, we humans have an inflated idea of our own importance.

How important is the Great Mother (Earth) in our modern lives?

Is psychotherapy addressing, or needing to address the effects environmental crises on the human psyche?

Jung added that “the discovery of the unconscious means an enormous spiritual task which must be accomplished if we wish to preserve our civilization”.

This paper is informed by Carl Jung, James Hillman, Meredith Sabini and Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Its multi-disciplinary nature also explores spiritual, indigenous, personal and ecological elements and how we might reconfigure the relationship between the unconscious and conscious in this environmental instability.

Jan Rodda is a practising psychotherapist and also volunteers this service in working with people who are homeless: this could be in the park and in a local support centre.

She has been a consultant in Aboriginal sites, rock art and cultural research; land restoration, wetland ecology and sustainability. Her underwater adventures have led to shipwreck archaeology and fascination in marine ecosystems.

Jan was a founding member of the Wetlands Conservation Society, WA Coral Reef Association and Scientists Against Nuclear Arms.

She is in awe of nature when birding, looking after orphaned joeys in the outback and being in remote and natural landscapes.
